TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
Professional Knowledge, Practice & Engagement
As I grow older each year, so does my statement of teaching philosophy. However, one thing that remains the same is viewing children as unique and providing them a safe, positive learning environment to excel in. “Education has the power to transform lives.. and supports young people to realise their potential” (Department of Education, 2019, p. 2). This is a core fundamental that drives my selective teaching practices. Providing children with fundamental resources that support their cognitive, emotional, social and physical skills, nurtures them to achieve excellence within the system. We reside in a society with such technological advances and complex environmental, social and economic change. Therefore, not only does education assist children in developing strong literacy and numeracy skills, it also promotes the wellbeing of young Australians and the ability to navigate through life with trust, authenticity and resilience (Department of Education, 2019).
Article 29 of the UNICEF convention rights of the child states “Education should develop each child’s personality and talents to the full. It should encourage children to respect their parents, their cultures and other cultures” (Unicef, 1996). This article is something that strongly resonates with me as it reflects how vulnerable children are in our society and how I play a part in what sort of individual they will one day become. This belief relates to Bronfenbrenner ecological system theory which states that children grow and develop based on influences within relationships close to them. Within a child’s microsystem, education/school and family are within the same network (Guy, Evans, 2020), therefore my job and profession is dependent on helping children be and become the best small people, to grow into being the best adults.
Another element that is a core of my teaching practice is teaching with differentiation. While the above is the main goal, it simply cannot be achieved if differentiation is not considered. Grimmett (2014) highlights how there is not always a ‘one size fits all’ case and therefore, taking my time to learn and understand my students and how they learn (AITSL, 2012) will optimise their learning and make me a better teacher. Within this, self-reflection is my best-friend. Grimmett (2014) suggests quick mental daily note taking and monthly/weekly self-reflection will allow me to step back and see if how I am teaching is effective. (380 words)
